snowy with a chance of death.

Life in the Midwest became treacherous this weekend with a blizzard that lasted from Friday night through to Saturday evening. Above is a photo of my neighbor attempting to snow blow his driveway Sunday morning after it had been dumped with 16 in. of snow. My dad and I found this pretty hilarious to watch until it came time to dig the car out of our own driveway so I could go to work.

My poor little house! It was the worst snowfall Minnesota has encountered since Halloween 1991 when we got 28 inches. I can’t imagine that at all. Getting home from work on Saturday night was quite an event. Driving was impossibly dangerous and my vision was completely whited out. Luckily I’ve taken the same route nearly daily for many years so I made it in one piece with familiarity on my side, but others weren’t so lucky. On- and off-ramps were littered with backed up vehicles, some in the ditch, and many cars had spun out into snowbanks. (see snowpocolypse at night.)

Work was so slow, even during our major clearance event, that I was able to make this sign for our book sale between ringing up customers when normally there’s barely time for lunch.

I still think the snow is beautiful though.

  1. Haha…we had a similar “event” here in Nevada a few weekends ago that I called “Snowmageddon.”

Actually, it was mostly hype — and about 9 inches of snow. Not quite so much “Snowmageddon” as a silly little storm.

Great pix — glad you were able to dig out of the mess!

  2. The pictures are great, wish I was there. We live in Houston having moved here from Akron. the last time our Wagoner was in 4 wheel was the winter of 2008. I admit that driving can be tricky and sometimes dangerous but the insipid heat and humidity get pretty bad as well. Enjoy it while you can and be safe.

  3. I agree that there’s little more lovely than snow! I live in Haiti, where obvioulsy we have none. But I so look forward to going home for the holidays to Kentucky–praying for lots of snow there–especially for Christmas!

Congrats on being freshly pressed! Happened to me last week. Hang on for the ride!

    Happy Holidays from Haiti,
    Kathy

  4. I soooo am disappointed in the snow lol I’m from PA and we get it all the time. Luckily, I moved to VA and down here, let’s just say when it flurries, they shut everything down!! Lovely.

  5. Snow IS beautiful but sometimes too much is just too much…lol… it has been snowing a lot in Europe as well- even here in the UK where we usually do not get that much snow. Well, at least it’ll make for a white Christmas. Happy holidays!

  7. Kudos on yur “freshly pressed” status! I seem to remember that last winter (January/February 2010) there was another “snowpocolypse”, in the northeast LOL
    Maybe this is a continuation.
Nothing more exciting than fresh, fine snow. i’m in Nashville, TN right now, and around here 1 – 3″ puts the locals in snow denial as they continmue to drive fast as if they can overcome the power of the ice – usually ending up sideways with damage to the vehicle.
    I say: “Go Snoow!”

  8. Here in Southern California it was in the 80′s yesterday and I suspect it will get there today as well. I wish we could take a little of your snow off your hands for you. I don’t want to have to dig out my car mind you but trying to get in the Christmas mood when you are sweaty doesn’t work.

  9. Thanks for the snowy pics! Im orginally from Toronto and have seen many snow storms. However I have never liked the cold and now live in Italy. But I still love to see the first snow fall, or storm. Beautiful.

  10. Here in England we got super-excited and had the entire city come to a standstill a couple of weeks ago. With around 15cm of snow (which roughly translates to 6-7inches)! My university closed down for a whole of 2 days (which, I am now finding, was highly detrimental to my education); something that it has never had to do!

  11. When people drive, bike, walk, run, play and do their “normal” every day life (even the ice cream man continues to ring his truck bell and wait for customers right in the middle of a blizzard) under inches and inches of snow… Now, THAT is “snowmaggedon” (which has been happening regularly in Copenhagen, Denmark)

  12. Until the vehicle I drive can fly. I never want to live in snow again. I will never forget the night myself and my roommate took two hours to get home,,,a trip that usually took us 30 mins because of the horrible snowy weather. It’s cold here in Sarasota, FL today and there are freeze warnings for tonight. Laugh if you will but cold is cold no matter where you go and as far as I’m concerned it’s the enemy.

  13. We’re getting our second leg of snow here in Northwestern PA. We got walloped last week, and this second round is supposed to be worse! Good luck digging out..make a snowman in the meantime! Congrats on being FP!

  14. Yay for FP! And WOW that’s alot of snow :) That’s the part about winter I don’t miss one bit. I was always afraid of getting stuck with my car on the side of the highway. I once saw a car do a 360 on the highway, while it was snowing, at night. I stopped (since they nearly hit me) and ran to their car. The young couple inside were terrified but in one piece, I offered to render First Aid if they needed. They said they were OK. I waited with my hazard lights until they started off again into the blizzard.

  15. In the beginning of this year (especially in February) we had our own snowpocolypse in western PA and probably areas around here. I have pictures on my blog of it. My grandfather died in February and the ground was so frozen that he couldnt be burried until 2-3 weeks after he was supposed to be.

  16. I live about an hour west of Sioux Falls SD. I kept wishing that storm would divert it’s course towards me, instead of attacking you guys. No such luck. :(

I am so jealous, since we only got about 2 inches.

  17. That much snow is ridiculous
I get upset when we get an inch once a year… Mind you I live in North carolina, It’s just reeeeaaaalllyyy annoying.
at about half an inch everything starts to shut down and the world stops like a broken dvd…
Don’t get me wrong; i don’t hate the snow, I think its beautiful… i just don’t like how inconvenient it is.

    Don’t stop Howling…

    • haha ikr? I only have a few pics from it but its enough to explain what happened. School wasnt canceled until we had like a foot of snow. We had to make up some days that were canceled. added half a month to the end of the school year. and the teachers didnt have anything else to teach so we just messed around the whole time

  18. The snow blowing neighbor actually had me in tears as my wonderful imagination formed the futility properly.

    Hilarious.

Especially with how little progress it seemed he had made.

I’ve never seen snow in my life (Aussie) but now maybe I’m thinking that’s a good thing!

    • Well I used to live in Canada and we never got snow like this! It was Vancouver, though. ;) If rain built up in banks like snow does I’m sure Vancouver would look pretty crazy though.

  19. I live in the same geographical area as dreamweaver38, and just north of there they measured 177 cm of snow had fallen in just two or three days last week. That’s right – over five FEET. I remember lots of snow as a child, but nothing like that. Amazing.

  20. The snow in Wisconsin wasn’t much better. We only got 10.5 inches, but it’s all frozen slush under the giant piles of while crap! My town was even completely shut down yesterday….No plows until the wee hours of this morning.

Keep warm, and drive safely! Don’t need anymore people in the ditch!

  21. I live in Chicago and we got a decent amount, but our neighbors in Northwest Indiana got slammed with lake effect snow. Horrible! I walk to work, so as long as I’ve got my Sorel boots, North Face jacket, scarf, hat, gloves and legwarmers (phew!), I’m good. As long as I remember to have kleenex in my pocket. :)

  22. We had our Snowpocalypse 2 winters in a row, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009 here in Washington state. The second one gave us 6 feet of snow in a couple of weeks. I never want snowpocalypse again!

  23. Great photos, they might end up in an American History book. I’ve listened all weekend to the weathermen and women talking about Minneapolis and the snow. I want it to snow in Tn. I don’t want it to snow that much. You were really brave to drive in that weather. Glad you got home safely.

  24. “My dad and I found this pretty hilarious to watch until it came time to dig the car out of our own driveway
so I could go to work.” ahahah! thats funny!

But now seriously, we are really messing up with the nature and the weather… the unbalance created will ultimately lead to increasingly mean weather conditions, I think politics should be a lot more concerned with this fact than they actually are.

  25. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! It happened to me yesterday as well, and it was an unusual experience to say the least. Besides the leap in comments and views, I found literally hundreds of porn comments that Aksimet caught which I offered to forward to a number of male commenters who found that funny. A unique day all around.

And that’s what brought me here and I’m so glad I came, because your pictures brought me back to an earlier life in eastern CT where the snow blew and the air smelled wonderful and the moonlight on a field of snow was the most romantic thing I ever saw.

Anyway, good luck with the blog. Good work so far!
