Here is my illustration of this week’s topic: Capable

It’s really happening! I got the best horoscope today and thought it went so perfectly with this week’s Illustration Friday prompt that I had to put two and two together. Actually, I read two different horoscopes for today that said basically this same exact thing! The other one said, “Get ready to start one of the most challenging and rewarding phases of life that you have had in a very long time.” Isn’t that exciting? If you don’t know, it all probably has to do with the fact that I am starting a handmade item, illustration, & graphic design business that I’m planning to launch this May, and my horoscope made me feel a little more capable of pulling it off. I have a ton of work to do, but I couldn’t be happier about it!

P.S. More exciting stuff! The story behind my business was posted on the Female Entrepreneur Association’s website yesterday! Go here to read about what it’s like to try to start a business while having a nearly full-time job. Whew!

Being grounded is something that I often strive to be, but it usually doesn’t take long before some crazy whimsical idea enters my mind and suddenly I will find myself floating towards the clouds. My boyfriend Max can attest – I’ll just be sitting there, possibly in the middle of a conversation, and my eyes will all of a sudden gloss over, my mind quickly becoming lost in some other train of thought far from the topic of the original conversation. I could be thinking about my next art project, a memory from long ago, or maybe even something as simple as what I’m going to eat for dinner. Sometimes life is just one big daydream for this Pisces.

Here is my illustration of last week’s topic: Disguise

Suddenly I’m a week behind on this whole shindig! I was hoping to do more than a digital collage for this one (as I have done for the last two), but instead I dilly-dallied and did nothing until now. Oh well. Here it is anyhow! I barely ever draw anymore and it makes me really sad because I was obsessed with drawing just a few years ago. I’ve just started an illustration class at Camp Pikaland so I’m hoping to remedy the situation and scrape the rust off of my less-than-stellar drawing skills.

illustration friday > influence.

Here is my illustration of this week’s topic: Influence

The 5 of Cups is a Tarot card which reminds us that where we put our focus in life has a great deal to do with the quality of our lives and how well they work for us. What are you going to choose to focus on?

If you think you know how the future may go, it may influence you to try to do things differently. My mother gave me tarot card readings when I was younger. Eventually I went on to buy my own deck and teach myself how to do readings. Although I have gotten to know the illustrations on the cards and their basic meanings fairly well, I’ve never been very good at explaining them to others so I’ve mainly just given myself readings.

When I was super into them and probably also a little lost in life, I would pull a tarot card every time there was a decision I couldn’t make on my own. It was a little ridiculous! “Sorry, I can’t go out tonight, the tarot promises disaster!” Needless to say, my interest got a little out of hand and made it somewhat hard for me to be spontaneous and live life to the fullest. Thankfully, a few years later, I’m not as into them as I used to be, but I’ve always admired their mysterious beauty and have wanted to create a deck of my own.

*new* illustration friday > swell.

{First of all, have you heard of Illustration Friday? It’s a weekly creative outlet/participatory art exhibit for illustrators and artists of all skill levels, designed to challenge participants creatively. Basically, every Friday there is a new topic posted, usually just one word, and anyone who wants to can put together an illustration with their own depiction of the word and post it to the site. I don’t know if I’ll be able to do one every week, but I’ll definitely try to give it a shot. It’ll be a great way to experiment with different types of media!}

I know, it’s weird. I started off, as I probably always should, looking up the definition of the word and I got a variety of different meanings back. The ones I tried to focus on were: 1. verb (esp. of a part of the body) Become larger or rounder in size, typically as a result of an accumulation of fluid, and 2. noun A person of wealth or high social position, typically one perceived as fashionable or stylish. I’ve never heard the word used in that second way, but I decided to trust the dictionary and go with it. I cut up a Nylon magazine, scanned in the cut-outs individually so I could move them around on the screen, and played with Google image search, color changes, and a few filters in Photoshop.
